Research Data Sharing: A Guide to Reproducible Research
September 19 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am EDT

Join us for a hands-on class on data sharing and discovery, where you’ll learn how to navigate the modern research landscape using powerful tools from Digital Science. This session will provide a practical overview of online strategies for finding, managing and sharing research datasets. We’ll show you how to leverage Dimensions and other search portals to efficiently discover data, and how to use Figshare for locating discipline-specific and institutional data repositories. You’ll also learn the crucial considerations for both re-using existing datasets and selecting the right repository for sharing and preserving your own research. By the end of this class, you’ll be equipped with the skills to effectively find, use, and share research data.
Key Learning Outcomes:
- Effectively use search tools to find and access relevant research datasets from a variety of sources, including discipline-specific and institutional repositories.
- Identify the key steps and best practices for preparing and sharing research data, including how to select and utilize a suitable data repository for preservation.
- Implement robust research data management practices for organization and reliability.
Instructors:
Lisa Curtin: Lisa Curtin, Coordinator of Research Data and Funders at Figshare, supports government, funder, and nonprofit clients. A key focus is driving Figshare’s involvement in the NIH Generalist Repository Ecosystem Initiative (GREI), which standardizes data sharing and educates researchers. She also manages Figshare Plus, a service that helps researchers with big data by providing increased storage and file size limits. In this role, she offers expert metadata curation to enhance data discovery and reuse. Lisa holds master’s degrees from the University of Tennessee Knoxville and Purdue University. Her expertise spans community management, repository systems, and data curation, with previous roles at ICSTI and OSTI.
Andrew Mckenna-Foster: Andrew Mckenna-Foster is a Product Specialist at Figshare with a background in ecology, natural history, and information science. For a decade, Andrew oversaw the operations of a small natural history museum and aquarium and directed the related research programs and biological collections. An interest in open science and data management led Andrew to the field of information science and he received a masters of library and information science, with a focus in data curation, from the University of Washington in 2020. At Figshare, Andrew focuses on helping researchers and librarians think through their open research and repository needs.
